Job Description

Calling all compassionate and caring behavioral health specialists who are looking to partner with a community based service provider offering mental health and substance abuse services where individuals live and work.

Addiction Recovery & Prevention (ARP) is looking for dedicated professionals to join our interdisciplinary team as a Prevention Specialist

In this dynamic and rewarding role, there is an emphasis on success, which begins with honoring each new client’s place within the recovery process and supporting, not directing, people from all walks of life in reaching their goals. Everything we do is need-based -- from identifying specific community issues and providing solutions, to creating the most effective programs.

Key ares of responsibility for our Prevention Specialist includes:

Work with a team of organization and community representatives to develop an understanding of child and youth need systems in the context of family, school and community functioning. Engage with these systems through such services as:
  • delivering evidenced based prevention programming for families and youth in schools and other community locations
  • working closely with school personnel to enhance existing, and integrate new, student services
  • connecting with formal and informal youth networks
  • working within community coalitions, including facilitating community meetings,
  • providing information dissemination on substance abuse and related topics

Screening and Referral
Develop opportunities for identifying “at risk" youth and providing screenings in school and community locations using standardized screening instruments, scoring the screening, and making recommendations for referrals for youth and families.

Brief Intervention:
Provide brief intervention to youth and families through such techniques as motivational interviewing and coping skills training.

Prevention Specialist –ocial Services / Healthcare / Mental Health

Job Requirements

Qualified Substance Abuse Professional as defined by:
(a)     a graduate of a college or university with a Masters degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or
(b)     a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a human service field and has two years of full-time, post-bachelor’s degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or
(c)     a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than human services and has four years of full-time, post bachelor’s degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or
(d)     a substance abuse prevention professional who is certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant (CSAPC) by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board and meets the above requirements as a QSAPP.
Must apply for CSAPC certification within 3 months of employment and become certified within five (5) years of employment.
Other job requirements include:   
  • Valid driver’s license including personal vehicle insurance coverage if applicable.
  • Emotional stability, maturity, warmth, openness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Minimum two (2) years continuous sobriety and/or recovery from mood altering drugs.  Recovery from alcohol or other drug(s) must be maintained at all times, with active involvement in recovery if applicable.
  • Commitment to best practices and implementation of evidence based programs, policies, and practices.
  • Ability to perform duties physically and mentally without harm to self or others.
  • Knowledge and experience with State substance abuse/mental health systems, particularly prevention.
  • Knowledge of prevention science, local community resource and service systems functioning, and strategies leading to the propagation of prevention and health promotion services and values.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent developmental dynamics in the context of family systems functioning. 
  • Ability to effectively deliver prevention programs to youth and adults and public presentations
  • Ability to effectively engage diverse populations
