Position Overview:

We are seeking an organized and positive Special Education Teacher to proved a full array of educational services, both indirectly and directly to the people we support.

As a Special Education Teacher with RHA, you will work with a Multidisciplinary Team and Direct Care Associates ensuring the quality of education exceeds standards. 

Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Evaluates the functioning level and needs of service users from an educational perspective using formal and informal diagnostic tools.
  • Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary Team in the development of each service user’s individual program. Works with and communicates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure provision of quality services.
  • Develops/implements educational training programs as established by the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Conducts and monitors training and behavioral programs.
  • Designs curriculum and activities for the classroom.
  • Documents progress notes in students records relative to objectives.
  • Revises plans as needed to facilitate ongoing progress on objectives.
  • Develops special activities educationally appropriate for clients on his/her caseload. Plans educational outing/field trips for students and participates in them as appropriate.
  • In-services staff who work with the students on habilitation programs so that training can be generalized across settings and people.
  • Ensures supply of educational materials for use in the classroom to meet students needs.
  • Works with representatives from other departments in an effort to address the total needs of each service user. 
  • Assists in the implementation of programs that are developed by other clinicians. 
  • Follows Dept. of Public Instruction regulations in the development and provision of educational services for students.
  • Participates in the Quality Assurance Assessment system as assigned.

Job Requirements

Our ideal Special Education Teacher is an excellent communicator and cooperative team player who excels at interviewing the people we serve to learn about their interests and goals, even individuals who cannot communicate verbally. You must also be detail-oriented and have excellent written communication skills to develop individual curriculum and disseminate person-centered plans.

Additional requirements for the Special Education Teacher include:

  • B.S. in Special Education or related field in early childhood education.
  • Valid North Carolina Teaching License in Special Education: Adapted Curriculum
  • An out-of-state special education teaching license is acceptable, as long as that state has reciprocity with North Carolina.
  • If you have a  related North Carolina teaching license, you must be willing to earn the Adapted Curriculum certification within 45 days of hire.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license may be required. Personal auto liability insurance is mandatory if transporting service users in private/personal vehicle(s)
  • Maintain the requirements for annual or 5 year cycle certification through the Department of Public Instruction.
  • Maintenance current/valid Teaching certification/license, or actively working towards requirements for such as deemed appropriate.
  • Maintain birth to kindergarten certification when obtained.
